The Golden Triangle, so named because of the triangle formed where the borders of Thailand, Burma and Laos meet, has a notorious past in opium trade. Nowadays it's a popular destination for visitors to northern Thailand because of its rugged mountain scenery, and the confluence of the 3 cultures.

On the powerful Mekhong river, speed along in a longtail boat with the scenic countryside of Thailand on one riverbank, Laos on the other. At Mae Sai, just across the Burmese border, shop in the border market for Burmese handicrafts, and Chiang Rai offers a night market with goods from all 3 countries. Mae Salong is a unique Chinese village high in the mountain peaks on the Thai-Burma border, originally settled by Kuomingtang (KMT) refugees fleeing China.
