Elephants and mahouts demonstrate logging skills.

Chiang Mai is the place for learning about these gentle giants of the forests, used regularly for logging. You'll see them bathing in the river, demonstrating their skill and agility at work, and then enjoy the thrill of riding an elephant through Thailand's lush tropical forests.

As the national animal of Thailand, Asian elephants have been the symbol of kingship since ancient times. Elephants have been used in Thai history on the battlefield, and as on and off road transportation.

Some mahouts are forced to abandon their elephants because there's no logging work. Elephants roam, destroy crops and are ultimately poached. Sadly, Thai elephants may face possible extinction within the next 20 years. The best way to preserve the elephant is to preserve the forest, but until proper conservation efforts are established elephant camps may be one alternative for preserving this majestic animal.
